Douglas Franklin Wright’s Early Life
Douglas Franklin Wright was born in Rockford, Illinois on August 25th, 1909. Wright’s early life was marked by activism and involvement in the arts. He began his film career as an editor and assistant director for the DuPont company before making his own films in the 1940s. Wright was one of the first filmmakers to explore African-American life and history on film, and is best known for his films Black Boy (1945) and Black Cat Bone (1949). In 1963, he founded the American Film Institute’s Black Film Project, which sought to document the contributions of black filmmakers. Wright died on July 18th, 1988.
